That was Soundwaves Minecraft 2015

So how was Soundwaves Minecraft for you this year? ūüôā For me (SabineMine), 2015 was possibly the most active Soundwaves Minecraft Project yet… I spent most of my afternoons online, and had a great time digging out my big hole (if you get a copy of the world – see below –¬†and look at it, it’s just the beginning of a big mine – my residence is called SabineMinesHere – and that’s what it turned out to be!), having a look at what others were doing, exploring the Nether and playing a little bit in our parallel Survival world.

So many things went on during the week, people came and built their competition entry, and then stayed to explore, build something together, go on adventures in the Nether or the Survival World, and then there was, of course, the online party – that party zone was amazing, thank you so much, everyone who helped prepare it!

The Wrap Party

One day’s rest for the players, a day of preparation & judging for the ops – and then it there was the party on Sunday. After a week of making new friends online, of meeting old friends again (and being very impressed by their ever-increasing Minecraft building skills) and spending time with them in our world,¬†this is where we got to¬†see (nearly) everyone in real life. I think our project is very special in that it brings together Minecrafters across a range of ages, who are all part of the Skerries community. Where else can you play on a safe server with people you know in real life? Great to put faces to names.

The one-hour party was full-on. Printouts of many of the builds! (By no way each of them, but loads and loads.) A video of our world! A Lego corner! A colouring table! Popcorn, marshmallows and other treats! And of course: The Minecraft Build Off, ably orchestrated by Wututui aka Ciarán. As you can see from the pictures, people were busy!

All our 2015 winners

It was an indication of the great buzz we had on the server this year that so many came to the party – practically all players were there on Sunday. And in my mind, everyone who was part of the 2015 project was a winner. Having said that, we did have a few prizes to give out… First of all for the competition on the day:

The Minecraft Build Off

26 participants. 2 minutes per round. 3 rounds. A lot of excitement and cheering from the crowd. And then it was clear… the winners were:

1st: Pukamay (again!)

2nd: Cocopoppy

3rd: Trevorpat

And the 2015 Soundwaves Minecraft Project Winners are….

For the fourth time now, Liam O’Donnell http://liamodonnell.com/ ¬†aka Praxismaxis did the judging. Liam is an award-winning author, teacher, and Minecraft fan. He came online from Toronto, where he lives (very useful for a judge to come from far, far away), and we spent a very pleasant yet busy four hours online on Saturday afternoon, virtually walking around the server while he told me via Skype what he thought of the build, and how much he enjoys judging this competition, and how he’d love to come to Skerries soon (he has family in Dublin and is overdue a visit there), while he was filling in a shared Google doc with his comments and rankings. Technology, eh? Minecraft server, Skype, Google docs all at once! ¬†[We’ll have to have a mini party for him when he does come, what do you think?]

In some categories, we had more entries than in others, so Liam picked between 1 and 3 winners and up to two Honourable Mentions.

Do have a look at their builds (and the many other great creations) on the 2015 world, which you can download for yourself (see below)!

The 2015 world for you to download

Would you like to “own” our final Soundwaves Minecraft 2015 world? Then follow the link.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/85f9awslerukiwf/MCSW2015.zip?dl=0

Download the zip and unzip it, then place it into your Minecraft Worlds folder. To find that, go to file manager and search for %appdata% – you should see a folder called .minecraft – and inside that folder, find the folder “saves” and unzip the Zip file into it. It should look like this:

click here to search for Minecraft where to put your world folder

Now, a word of warning – it’s just a copy of the world, without all the bells and whistles that came with the server, so no protecting, /home, /spawn etc. But on the upside – it’s yours to do with as you please! ūüėÄ

A bonus fromDescent-2015cover-700H our judge: A free Minecraft eBook for you to download!

Liam O’Donnell, our esteemed judge, is also an author of books for young readers, and he has written a number of Minecraft-based books. He has kindly offered a free copy to the participants of the Skerries Minecraft Project – all you have to do is to go to this link http://liamodonnell.com/free-minecraft-book/ and enter your email address, and “Descent into Overworld” is yours.

That’s it for this year!

We’d like to thank Storm in a Teacup in MinecraftStorm in a Teacup for sponsoring the three first prizes in the Skerries category, and Caroline Curley for the fantastic photographs she sent us. Additional photography
by Michael McKenna, Skerries Camera Club.

A big thank-you to Soundwaves for giving us the opportunity to run this unique event, to Ciar√°n McKenna, organiser, tech wiz & op, and Mat May, organiser, creator of this accurate Minecraft representation of Skerries, designer of our posters, certificates, badges. I myself, as organiser and op, had a great time and hope that we’ll see you again!

Please register your details (optional but please) & Crow Minecraft Man

Please let us know what¬†build or builds you’re entering for the competition (closes at 8 p.m. tonight) – you don’t HAVE to do this,¬†but if you do, it will help the judge find your entry, and that’s good, right?

And there will be a little something extra on the party day for the  first five to do so!

Below the form, there’s a screen shot of the result of our arts¬†mini project yesterday, a crow Minecraft man based on Niamh Sharkey’s design (also below). Cute, eh? ūüėČ

See you (the participants of the 2015 Soundwaves Minecraft Project) on Sunday at the Little Theatre from 12 noon!

Sabine

Crow Minecraft Man

Crow Man Art! And: Can you help at the party?

We have a new addition to our arts area, the sculpture park (/warp park to get there), and it is the beginning of Crow Man! If you have¬†seen¬†Niamh’s sculptures for the Soundwaves 2015 Artwaves project, this lad will seem very familiar…. and now we’re looking for people to help recreate him (based on Niamh’s pixelated drawing, see below) in the Sculpture Park of our 2015 Soundwaves Minecraft World!

Another quick bit of information….¬†we need your help!¬†We need four adults to volunteer, in addition to the Soundwaves Yellow Shirts and two Transition Year students we already have, to be at our Wrap Party on Sunday. You’d be needed from 11 a.m. to about 1.30 p.m. at the latest (and of course you can bring a child or two). General party supervision stuff,¬†no previous Minecraft or other experience needed! Please let us know at soundwavesMC2015@gmail.com if you can help out. Thank you!

Quick update on the 2015 Project!

The server will be open as normal today and then until 8 p.m. tomorrow, Friday.
We’ll have an online farewell party from 7.30 to 8 p.m. … there are games in the party zone, prepared by a number of players, and we’ll just hang out and say good bye to this year’s server.

1. Remember the competition! Winners will be announced after the party on Sunday.
You can enter one build into the competition for the Fantasy category
AND one for the Skerries category.
Put a sign in front of it with its name and its category.
If you don’t have a sign, we don’t know you want to enter the building, so the sign is your competition entry. Any questions, let me know online or send me an email.
2. If there are any problems on the server, ¬†telling me online or sending¬†an email to me, Sabine, at soundwavesmc2015@gmail.com should sort it. We’ve had very little griefing (destroying of others’ buildings) this year, and where it was shown to me, I’ve managed to undo the damage.
Please protect your buildings!
Also no need to guess who did what, if something was indeed destroyed… We can see who placed or destroyed a block, and we have sent warning emails in 3 cases.
So far we did not have to ban any players, but where griefing happens from the same account a second time, we will ban the player, even if it’s a brother or sister who got hold of the account and did the damage…. you’re responsible for what happens on your account.

3. Survival World online! For those who’d like an extra challenge, or feel they have built enough. This is out of the competition (as is the nether), just for fun – type in forward slash warp survival, as in:
/warp survival
and you will be in a different world… To get back, go /warp spawn

4. PARTY! The wrap party on Sunday, 12 noon until about 1 p.m. in the Little Theatre, followed by the prize giving:
  • Included in your server pass! If you’re not coming, please let us know so we can allocate some tickets to others who might want to join us.
  • There will be a Minecraft Build-Off on four cccSkerries laptops, with small prizes and in particular the glory of winning – 3 rounds @ 2 minutes.
  • Also other activities like a Lego Corner, party snacks, and images from this week.
Parents can drop their kids at 12 and return for the prize giving at 1 p.m.
That’s it for now – see you then!
Sabine
The 2015 magnets have arrived! Available at our party on Sunday.

The 2015 magnets have arrived! Available at our party on Sunday.

The server is ready and will open soon!

The first 20 server passes out of the 100 available have already been sold. And we haven’t even told many people¬†about the 2015 Soundwaves Minecraft Project yet!

It’s time to join now. Get the 2015 server pass online directly by following the Get 2015 Server Pass link – or go to the Skerries News Information Office, 18 Thomas Hand Street, and buy it there (and make sure you send us the registration email!)

The rules are pretty much the same as last year, and you can check them out here on the website, but we’ll decide on the age groups for the competition until we know what age the participants are, so that the groups will be a bit more even.

We have cool prizes (at least that’s what I, Sabine, think, but then who would not love to win¬†little Minecraft figures and cardboard Minecraft heads and 10 cm cubes that look like diamond ore and can light up…)

This year, we are starting with a virtual, online kick-off – hope to see all players on the server from 12 noon to 1 p.m. this Saturday!

If you join us later, that’s no problem either, of course. The server will remain open until the next Friday at 8 p.m.

It’ll be creative. It’ll be peaceful. It’ll be colourful. There’ll be two categories for the competition, Skerries and Fantasy. There’ll be a few surprises as the week goes on….but you’ll have to wait and see for yourself!

And it will all end with a real-life, don’t-bring-a-laptop¬†Wrap-Up Party(included¬†in the price of ‚ā¨7 if buying the server pass in person in the Skerries News Information Office, or ‚ā¨8.07 if choosing the online option) on Sunday 27 September, 12 noon to 1 p.m., in the Little Theatre.

At the end of the party (which can only be attended by those who are on the server because we have limited space in the Little Theatre) the winners of this year’s competition will be announced and the prizes handed out.

It will be so much fun! Looking forward to it already!
Don’t forget to get that server pass!
